Yavada

Yavada jail is situated on the outskirts of Calcutta.Though it is not as scary as the infamous Black Hole it is still a horrible place to live in.The jail is surrounded by imposing stone walls that are topped with broken glass pieces.The cells are all rather small with just one window each for entry of natural light.Each cells is occupied by three prisoners.The inmates often complain that there are far too many mosquitoes and cockroaches in the cells.The light provided by a single zero power bulb within each living area is quite insufficient.Inmates are allowed to bathe just once a week and for half a minute only.The food is terrible and no meat is served,ever.Some of the prisoners dominate the others.There are fist-fights almost every second day.Despite all this Yavada has a good record as a correctional facility.Other places situated in the interior districts of Bengal are worse off.No prisoner who has lived in Yavada wants to live in any other penitentiary.
Four new prisoners had recently come to Yavada.Their names were Ian,Andy,Barry and Derek.They had been sentenced to seven years time for robbing a bank.However they were eager to get out much before that because one of their former accomplices had made off with the booty.And they knew where he was hidden.The foursome decided to escape at the earliest.They chose the easiet way out of the jail.Seven days into their stay in Yavada, they decided not return to their cells after dinner. That evening they climbed the walls of the jail since they were good at being cat burglars.But as luck would have it they jumped down from the wall directly into a muck-filled pond.And none of them knew how to swim.In the end they had to call for help and were saved by prison guards.The four bank robbers became laughing stock of the whole jail.
The four friends knew that people had escaped out of Yavada by digging underground passages.They decided to try that.In this endeavour Tinni,an old prison hand helped them actively.But after digging was completed and the four were about to escape from Yavada whom should they meet but the jail superintendent,in the flesh.It seeemed that Tinni had been an informer all along.The four desperadoes decided to use Tinni then.They had one of their friends tell Tinni that the four friends were discussing another escape plan.With the knowledge that Tinni was listening in,the four friends discussed excitedly plans for escape in the laundry van.Tinni immediately went and told the super the whole story.That is what the friends wanted.While the laundry van was being loaded and with the entire posse of guards watching it,they quietly climbed into the garbage truck.Its driver was an old friend.And that is how four prisoners escaped from Yavada jail for the first time.
