Friday Afternoon Encounter

"Do you have any carrots?" I had just come out of the apartment carrying my overnight bag and I turned around. A plump stranger with long gray pigtails stands next to my front stoop looking at me eagerly.
"Um no, no I don't," I say the obvious. My senses recover and I wittily ask, "Why?" She looks at me, almost crest fallen and sways side to side in her baggy red OSU T-shirt. I stand awkwardly, thinking of something else charming to say and merrily be on my way.
"Well. See, I have a rabbit..." She continues to sway and look at the ground. A moment later she suddenly brightens again and says, "Are you going away for the weekend?" I stupidly look down at my bag in hand, which is stuffed full of clothes for my trip. Who the hell is this person standing here demanding both carrots and my soon to be whereabouts? What if she's a devious burglar scoping the neighborhood for a house empty of people but full of riches? Not that I exactly have that, unless your idea of wealth is a second hand TV and a bunch of thrift store furniture. No, she looks like what she probably is--a lost soul or a human velveteen rabbit searching for tubers.
"N-no. No, I'm going to my friend's house to give her these clothes." Why am I lying or even explaining myself to rabbit-woman? She actually looks like an anthropomorphized lop-eared rabbit with her long gray pigtails and shapeless garments. I imagine her rabbit as about her size, but with red eyes and teeth well sharpened and orange from endless amounts of pilfered carrots.
"Well, I have to go." I step off the stoop and feel a strong urge to add, "But I'll be back before dark," as if I'm telling my mother and not a would-be stalker. She nods calmly and sways, looking towards the next row of red brick apartment buildings. I walk away, a little nervous that my back is to her and I can't see what she's doing now. When I turn to unlock the car though, she is merely sway walking towards the next building, in search of either carrots or riches.
