The little star was sad. All the other stars in the sky were bigger
and brighter than she was. She wanted to be bigger. She wanted to be
brighter.
"Why are you so sad," the Dog Star asked her one night.
"I am sad because I want to be bigger and brighter."
"But why? You are a beautiful little star."
"I am too small," she cried. "I want to be big and bright just like
you!"
The Dog Star twinkled at her. "I don't know. Sometimes being bigger
doesn't neccessarily mean being better."
Still, the little star was not satisfied. She sat in the night sky
still feeling blue.
"Why are you so sad," the North Star asked the little star.
"I am sad because I want to be bigger and brighter."
"But why? You are a beautiful little star."
"I am too small! I want to be big and bright just like you!"
The North Star twinkled at her. "I don't know. Sometimes being brighter
doesn't neccessarily mean being better."
Still, the little star was not satisfied. She sat in the night sky
feeling blue.
"Why are you so sad," the Sun asked the little star.
"I am sad because I want to be bigger and brighter."
"But why? You are a beautiful little star."
"I am too small! I want to be big and bright just like you!"
The Sun glared at her. "I don't know. Sometimes being bigger and
brighter doesn't neccessarily mean being better. I am the biggest and
brightest star in the sky and there is room for only one of us. I am
important to the solar system but you are important too. And you are
very beautiful to look at. People cannot look upon me because I am so
big and so bright that I hurt their eyes. You, on the other hand, can
be gazed upon in admiration and beauty. You are the star of wonder and
you are a very special star. You are the star that foretold the birth
of Jesus Christ to all the world. You are the most important star in
the sky and you will always be special because of that."
The little star thought about what the Sun had said to her. Suddenly,
she didn't feel so small and unsure of herself. She felt special and
bigger and brighter than even the Sun itself. She twinkled happily in
the night sky and floated away into outer space on a cloud of
moondust.
