Dirt

Leaning out of my window at dusk I saw
the rooftops and backyards sitting under
a blue and white sky, streaked with clouds.
I closed my eyes for an instant and I saw
this world rendered barren and bare,
infertile and stark, the rooftops and backyards
stripped away and replaced by vast acres
of sterile earth, skeletal trees and the harsh cries
of crows.
I looked out across this empire of dirt and I saw
you and me crawling through the mud,
stained with sweat and blood, caked in dust,
clawing our way into the bloody sunset,
searching for something to bring the feeling back.
