Tantalising Text

Who scorns those who won't leave their mobile phone
And sneer at how they walk around alone
Constantly peering at the puny little screen
Hoping and waiting like a love forlorn teen
One missed call or even just a message text
Looking down, staring and always perplexed

But you too have become like all those others
Anxiously watching and waiting like lovers
Are there messages after just looking away
Wondering whether to send one, anyway
Check if there is any signal strength at all
See if the battery charge is still showing full

You look and watch and sometimes believe
You see that welcome symbol '1 Message Received'
Knowing it is pointless so now turn around
But worry you'll miss it or is the sound turned down
Please switch it off, that's enough for the day
Yet suddenly you're like them and tapping away!
