Dearly Beloved 1923-1984
There is a gazebo viewable from
the interstate as you drive toward
Denver from North-Eastern Colorado.
It is just a little white and redwood
summerhouse sitting in the middle of a
small town golf course.
Years ago it was well cared for,
repainted, broken benches
replaced, cocktails and barbecue
served within its open walls.
On the hot days of August, golfers
rested under it's roof finding
the shade that was so clearly
missing on the rest of the course.
I wonder if anyone remembers the man
who hand built that octagonal memorial,
if the words he chose so carefully
for the bronze plaque can still be seen,
but I fear it is like the miracle of
loaves and fishes,
you can only see them
if you were lucky enough
to have fed on the riches.
