Tomboy
She grew up with the idea
that if she tried hard enough
she could be the first woman
to hit a homerun in the World Series,
or make a daring shot and
pull one off for the Celtics.
Even as a small girl, she knew
she would not be big enough when grown
to play football, but still would spend hours
throwing a pigskin through the tire swing
pretending to be Johnny Unitas.
She out ran, out biked, out jumped
and out tree climbed every boy
in her class for years.
When she turned eleven she started taping
her breasts flat to her chest and hiding
her starter's bra in the garage
before heading out to school.
This was all before the British invaded her
mind during the "I wanna hold your hand" rebellion
and hot pants replaced cut-off jeans.
Her Mama wanted her to try out for the
Miss Big Horn Country Beauty Contest,
and to sing and dance her way to riches.
She never got that brazen with her looks,
for she knew, despite it all, when dreaming
she never heard, "There She Goes",
the only song she ever heard was
"Take Me Out to the Ball Game".
