A bloodless coup
Lightning does such damage,
leaves such a haunting breath,
makes the mind,
the tongue play tricks;
over-arcs what's safe
by many miles,
fries possibilities like bacon.
The victim does not choose,
of course,
this beautiful, destroying fire
that blinds and blesses to his core.
But there are ways to cure such things.
Words bright as blades,
sharper and more sure,
excise the riven tissue -
technically unnecessary now -
in one sweet stroke
so quick, so clean,
so self-assured there is no time
for pain.
I've never had my heart cut out before.
