A GHOST VISIT
Cybele's heavenly blue eyes sparkled with joy like bright stars in the
dark sky as her father drove up the rocky driveway of the Rose House
Bed and Breakfast in sunny Cape Cod.
Cybele ran out of the car and yelled out to her mom, "Wow, this house
looks beautiful. It looks like a sea of color with all those beautiful
flowers in bloom."
The bright red, yellow, purple and pink wild flowers brought a smile
to her face that would have brightened any gloomy day.
"I love this place. It's like heaven," she said happily.
Cybele playfully ran outside and breathed in the perfume from all the
scented flowers. She whistled and skipped around the porch that wrapped
around the entire home. Suddenly she froze like a statue, afraid as if
she had seen a ghost.
"Mom, Dad come quick," she screamed.
Her parents ran quickly over to her.
"Look at these trees. They look so creepy and spooky. They look like
big ugly monsters," Cybele said.
Cybele's mom smiled and said, "They 're just old. Maybe back from the
days of George Washington."
Cybele still thought the trees looked scary. They looked like they
were making sad and painful faces.
Maybe ghosts lived inside these trees and came out at night to
frighten people or take them away, thought Cybele. Cybele had a fear of
ghosts ever since her older teenage cousin told her that a ghost chased
her and wanted to take her away to a land where only evil spirits and
monsters lived.
Cybele, her mom and dad went inside the 18th century house. Kate, a
tall thin woman with long dark hair, welcomed them to her Victorian
style home. Her parents talked to Kate while Cybele walked into the
living room and noticed a shiny glass coffee table. On the table,
Cybele saw a book titled, Haunted Houses in Cape Cod.
"This looks intersting. Wow, it would be so spooky to visit a haunted
house," she quietly said to herself.
In a panic, she took the book and ran to her parents, "Mom, Dad, look,
we're staying in a haunted house!"
Kate smiled and said, "Don't worry, the house only has friendly
visitors."
Cybele looked at the thin, dark haired woman and said, "I don't care.
Ghosts like to scare little kids and take them far away."
Kate took the family to their rooms. Cybele walked in and said, "Cool.
These rooms are beautiful."
She loved the black and white family pictures that hung on the walls,
delicate antique vases and view of the pretty red roses from the
outside window. She admired everything.
"Wow, for a haunted house this place is really cool," said
Cybele.
Her parents and Kate laughed. The family unpacked their bags. Cybele
looked out the window turned to her parents and asked, "Can we go to
the beach? It's so beautiful outside. "
"Sure," they said.
Once they arrived at the beach, Cybele admired all the dunes that
formed over the many years. They formed into steep hills. The family
sat under the bright, sunny sky in their new, ocean-blue beach chairs
with a huge umbrella that had a picture of sunflowers on it. Cybele
relaxed on the beach and buried her legs into the soft, white
sand.
As she watched the waves crash against the shore, she whispered to
herself, "I wonder if the Rose House is really haunted."
Hours passed, the weather became cooler and the bright orange-yellow
color of the sunset could be seen.
"It's getting late. We should head back to the Rose House," said
Cybele's dad.
They left the beach and stopped at an outdoor restaurant for dinner.
They enjoyed the cool evening sky as they sat on picnic benches. They
ate juicy fried fish sandwiches with crunchy onion rings that melted in
their mouths.
After dinner, they drove back to the Rose House. Cybele stared at the
stars in the dark sky. When they arrived back at the house, Cybele
stepped out of the car and heard noises.
"Whats that?" Cybele cautiously asked. "Sounds weird. Maybe it's a
ghost."
"Don't be silly. It's not a ghost. Just the wind making strange
noises," her mom said.
Cybele whispered, "It sounds weird and scary."
Her parents said nothing but they also felt it was something they had
never heard before. It seemed like something out of this world so they
went inside the house and locked the door. Cybele went up to her
bedroom. She loved the old fashion lamp on the small oak table next to
her bed. As she looked at it, the light went out and the room turned
dark.
"Dad, the light went out," she yelled to her father.
Her dad walked int othe bedroom and looked at the light and asked,
"Cybele did you unscrew the bulb? It's loose."
"No," she replied.
Her dad screwed the bulb in and left. The light went out again and
Cybele screamed, "Dad, the light went out again!"
He ran back in, looked at the bulb and said, "Cybele are you playing
games with me? The bulb was unscrewed again."
"No," she said. Puzzled, she looked at her dad and said, "Do you think
it's a ghost playing a joke on us?"
Her dad smiled and said, "No Cybele, its not a ghost. Stop
worrrying."
"Dad, can we watch some TV? I'm too scared to stay in the room alone,"
said Cybele.
"Ok," said her dad.
Cybele watched TV until she was no longer able to keep her eyes open.
Her mom slowly picked her up and lightly placed her on the bed and fell
asleep where she comfortably rested her head on a fluffy pillow.
In the middle of the night, out of nowhere an old woman's voice said,
"Cybele, wake up."
Cybele woke up and asked herself, "Did I hear something?"
Suddenly, she saw an old wrinkled face above her bed. Frightened, she
jumped ouf of bed.
"Don't be afraid. It's me, your grandma," said the old woman.
Cybele ran out of the room screaming, "Ghost! Ghost!"
She ran into her parents' room and jumped into their bed. Her dad got
out of bed, walked into her bedroom and saw nothing.
"Cybele, there's nothing there. I think you had a bad dream," he
said.
"No, I know what I saw. I saw a ghost," said Cybele.
She snuggled in between her parents for the rest of the night and
stayed under the covers.
In the morning she wondered, "Did I really see a ghost? The ghost said
it was grandma. Could it really be her?"
Later that morning, Cybele saw Kate and told her what happened.
She asked Kate, "Is this house haunted by my grandma?"
"No Cybele," Kate answered," your grandmother is only one visitor from
another world. Our house is visited by all the spirits that want to
visit their special relatives to say 'hello'."
The entire day Cybele thought to herself, "Should I sleep in the room
alone again? What if the ghost comes back? Should I be scared? If it's
really Grandma, I don't need to be scared."
Nighttime came. Cybele nervously went to her bedroom. She couldn't
sleep though. She was too scared. What if she saw a ghost? What if the
ghost was evil? What if the ghost was a good ghost and her Grandma? She
had too many questions and no answers. At times she wanted to leave her
bedroom and sleep in her parents bed again. She stayed though. Slowly
she became more and more tired. Her eyes closed and she fell
asleep.
In the morning, she felt relieved and happy. Somehow she felt like she
spent time with her grandma by the ocean in Cape Cod. Just like she did
when she was younger. Did she dream this or did she really expreience
it. It felt so real. She and her grandma walked across the ocean and as
the waves hit the sand and covered the bottom of their feet in water.
They also collected sea- shells. Maybe her grandma did visit her over
night and they relived those good old days of walking on the
beach.
As she rolled out of bed, she noticed a seashell on the night stand
next to her bed with fresh ocean sand in it. "How did it get there",
she asked herself.
She smiled and thought, "Wow, maybe ghost visitors are friendly and
not scary. Thanks Grandma. I love you."
