D: Evolution - Part Four

David sat by Mary's bedside. The doctors didn't know for sure what
was wrong with her. All her biological functions seemed to be normal,
she had no brain damage, she was 100\% healthy, they couldn't find
anything wrong with her - only she was deeply asleep and had been now
for over three days.
The doctor diagnosed her as having a serious form of narcolepsy,
although he said he wasn't sure about it: the medical profession knew
very little about narcolepsy, it was still something of a mystery to
them. So far the only thing they knew about it: was the symptoms, and
that it appeared to affect the part of the central nervous system that
controls sleep and wakefulness. It wasn't a psychological disorder, and
at the moment there was no cure for it.
They admitted they had never known anyone to stay asleep for so long
after an attack of narcolepsy. They said that when she woke up they
would like to perform some more tests on her. David told them that Mary
should be the one to make that decision when she woke up. All anyone
could do at the moment was to try to keep her alive and wait for the
day when she would wake back up.
David looked at her. She had a drip attached to her: to feed and keep
her alive whilst she slept. Her heart rate and respiration were being
monitered by the machines by her bedside. Her face looked peaceful, as
if she wasn't in any pain.
David realised in that moment how deeply he loved her. He realised he
could love no other, no other face held him in awe like hers did. He
vowed that when she woke up he would spend more time with her. Stuff
his job, He thought. It was because of his job that he had been unable
to be there for her when this had happend. He took hold of her limp
hand and squeezed it. She was everything to him, he wished that he had
said more to her, expressed his love for her more than he had done.
Instead of work. How work had dominated his life; so that it meant at
times he would spend long periods away from home, leaving Mary on her
own. He began to resent his job and the hours it had stolen from his
wife.
He felt regret, for all the things he had left unsaid. All the things
he had left undone. He kissed her hand tenderly, "I love you Mary," he
said. "You're going to get through this, I know you are, and I'am with
you."
He fought back the tears, David was always one to imagine the worst
possible scenario, he couldn't help it, it was part of his job to think
like this. He tried to keep himself positive, she was going to be
alright. She would wake back up...
