A Little Dying

You think to reach deep inside,
Fumble, pull, dig, drag reaction,
Dominant, scratch, grab and yank,
Knead, nuzzle, palpate, secure.
Kiss me, share air inside our lungs,
Stare through me; pull me in, stroke,
You know me, it’s my skin
You have always lived in.
Did I allow, you murmur, did I?
Another to love me as you do now?
How the hell could I?
When I’m crying inside,
You are the shadow of my life.
Crushing, twisting, bending, conquering,
Folding, developing we fight,
I, for freedom, you for sight,
I, for love, you for light,
Both blind one moment
In time, as you rock me softly,
Buried on loves beating heart, cradled at last.
Joined we may be, recognise the soul in you,
As you do me, for it is one, centuries old.
We’ve been here before, remember?
I know you my heart, we share the same breath?
Oh yes, as we mix, dance, synchronise, then
Part to lie side by side, a little of me dies,
Each time we say goodbye.
