The Decision

She hated having to make decisions, especially quick ones. She liked to sit down and create lists of pros and cons. No chance of that here – it had to be a quick yes or no. There were two lives, possibly more, in the balance. The daft thing was that the question was all that she’d wanted, all that she’d yearned for for at least six months.
So why was it such a decision? Why did it feel like such a leap of faith into the unknown? Was it because of the lives and having the responsibility for making it all official? If she said no then how could she live with the enormity of regret and despair?
It was a romantic situation all that you could ask for really. Sat on a beach bathed in the light of dawn. She hadn’t even wanted to come. She’d tried to refuse – Why not? What kind of an idiot wants to get up at 6 in the morning when that was all that they’d done for the past 3 months fruit picking. It was holiday time, time for a lie-in. Time for a rest. But no instead it was time for a test. If she said yes, then what was she to become? Half of one? Is that all there is?
He’s down on one knee, she’s sat in the sand. Head on her hands looking at the kangaroos bouncing through the dawn.
He asks.
They look at each other.
Minds ticking. Hearts beating.
She says yes. They look forward not back, the day break helps and as the sun rises so do they, smiling.
Heck he thinks. So does she.
Should I have thought a bit longer, asked for a repeat? Too late for that. The decision is made. For better or worse. She took that man on the beach into her heart and there he shall stay with the decision made. There’s no turning back, no changing of minds. The answer was yes. And so they moved forward to family and friends to share in the fun, the happy proposal. What can go wrong? Nothing much really life just goes on.
