I sat on the edge of the water fountain after he left and pondered over our conversation…
“Fact is, in life, we often have to do things we don’t want to do; and we often get lost trying to find our way, because we lose sight of our priorities, and because we let ourselves get overloaded/overwhelmed by things we think we have to do but don’t really have to.
Some of us struggle quietly, while most of us succumb to pressures and cry out loud for the whole world to know that we are in pain, that we are suffering.
Fact is, that despite factual differences, we are the same – we’re all struggling!
Count your blessings, because someone, somewhere has it worst than you or me.”
“But surely life is what you make of it!” – I protested
Examples of the unfortunate are numerous but… fact is, we all strive for happiness, and it seems to me that it prevails in poverty as well as in riches. The underlying agreement here is that in life, we are more unhappy than we are happy. Environment and circumstances are often at the root of our misfortune but secondary to our biggest enemy – ourselves! We are selfish by nature! Fact is, we always want more. A little could mean a lot to the person who has none but just a little to the person who has plenty.”
“Are you saying that it boils down to the person’s perception of the situation?” He smiled and stared at me victoriously. “It’s funny how logic doesn’t always make sense – just like philosophy only makes you think, it provides no answers.”
He then got up and left. And I was left trying to figure out how the conversation came about or how it branched out from duties/priorities, happiness/unhappiness, materialism and philosophy…
