I Watched You Sleeping Last Night

I watched you sleeping last night,
curled up in the foetal position,
the pink blanket tucked tightly around you,
breathing slowly.
I ached with every breath.
I stood over your bed and watched
as your eyes flickered
while you dreamt
of ivy and roses gardens
where I used to pick you flowers.
How I longed to touch you,
to brush my hand against your cheek.
And then your dad came in
and froze in the doorway.
He stood there long after I had gone,
terrified,
wondering whether or not I had been there at all.
