"Ok" said Smudge "lets get the afterburner on and we can set
course for Alteron V".

"We're not going anywhere sir, the damper field has just kicked in and
closed down the whole shebang".
Smillie was not happy
"How are we going to get moving in time when the damper field is on and
the sun goes supernova in less than four smorgatrons?"

The team were in BIG trouble. It was time for the Boss to take control.
"Let's not panic yet Guys, we can put the nanoprobe into the anti-grav
Dimple and reset the damper with reconfigured nanobots. It should take
about a smorgatron and a half".

"Yes" said Smudge, "but what about the 'Positron Gravity Effect'? If we
don't splice the Quark interface into the Dimple at the same time we
could cause an exponential increase in the positive gravity field which
will lead to an implosion of the whole assembly".

"Good thinking Smudge", The Professor was creasing his brow, "If we
could just exorcise the anti-quark resistance effect, the nanobots
could reassemble the time warp control mapper which would then put the
positrons back into alpha-state. Then the splicing of the Quark
Interface with the Dimple can be done more efficiently and the nanobots
can do their jobs."


"I think we may have missed something Prof," Boss was
beginning to sweat, beads of perspiration were running down his left
ventricle. "When the damper kicked in it will have tripped the relays
to the nanoprobe outlet valve. If we continue without resetting, then
we'll get a pyroplastic effect in the outlet pipe and a time warp will
ensue, giving us no chance of escape. We'll be going round in a
wormhole until supernova."

The professor was getting twitchy now, "The pyroplastic effect will
only last 20 nanoseconds or so, we may be able to negate its impact
with an omega shield similar to the one proposed by Einstien IV way
back in 2215. Can you build such a device, Smillie?"
"I might, but it would take a googolplex to do it and anyway I don't
have an omega inhibitor or an anti-quark relay, I can't do it without
them".

"Right, that's it then guys." Boss was taking control again, "there's
only one thing for it. We've been talking for a smorgatron and achieved
nothing, off to the escape pods! Set your controls for Delta Quadrant
and lets hope we can outrun the shock wave".


Smillie was still not smiling, "The damper will have also
tripped the relays for the escape pod ejection circuits. Looks like
we're cooked."
