astronauts

i remember when it snowed
at first only in my dream but then hannon was there
shaking me awake in the middle of the night
to point out the window at a world that was black
and white. it was one of the last times i would see it
that way.
i giggled as we slid into our jackets and boots
and hannon told me to shut up cause i'd wake
mom and dad. we slid out the house, and
on the porch i brought two fingers to my lips
and pushed my breath through them.
"look, han, i'm smoking a cig," i said.
he tugged on my arm and said, "let's go."
so we ran.
we ran to brooke's house, to the backyard
where the trampoline was
covered in white.
she was already sitting on it, nose red and runny,
waiting for us.
"i thought you wouldn't come," she said.
"but now you're here and we can be
astronauts."
jumping, i tried to touch the face
of the real moon above,
so far away yet seeming
so near.
