Misunderstanding

After the discovery of bomb-making materials at a nearby bar, the
friendly bartender who is also our neighbor was taken in for
questioning and held without charge. It was rumored that when
confronted with questions weighted with a presumption of guilt the
bartender had attempted clarity in defining his answers. When asked his
occupation he claimed that he was not in fact a bartender but only
tended bar to make a living. It does not define me as a person, he is
purported to have said. Stating that they had only asked him about his
occupation, the agents apparently took his response as a sign of
insolence and handcuffed him. One of the agents, however, though
undeterred in his aim to apprehend bomb-making terrorists and
considered among his colleagues to be a fierce preserver of justice,
felt he understood the bartender's plaint and thought to himself that
he related to his job in much the same way. As they entered the station
he turned to the bartender and said reassuringly, You know, of course,
that we are not interested in you as a person.
