I felt the cold, bitter wind rush against my face, as I ran as fast as I could down the long narrow driveway. I could hear the thing behind my seeming to get closer every time my foot hit the ground. My heart was racing a hundred and fifty miles a hour, it seemed, but, I kept pushing myself, I couldn't slow down, it would surely get me if I did. That thought motivated me enough to run a little faster, but, it still seemed to be getting closer. It was getting darker outside and before I knew it I was running in the woods, jumping over fallen trees and piles of brush. I could hear the thing behind me even louder now than before. My mouth was getting dry and my legs began to ache, I didn't think I could go on any further and that's when I collapsed.
When I woke up it was morning and the sun was shining bright. It was warm against my face, despite the bitter cold air. I was still lying in the woods where I collapsed the night before wandering why that thing didn't just eat me. Now I am lost in the woods and don't know where the heck I'm at. I don't know where to go. The woods were creepy even in the day time, most of the trees were hunched over or fallen down like a tornado or some other strong storm had gone through it the night before. There were dead leaves on the ground and the sound of rushing water somewhere in the distance. I couldn’t see too far into the woods because of the thick gray fog that covered the ground. I sat down on a nearby fallen tree and started to think about where I was before the thing was chasing me.
I didn’t like being in the mountains, isolated, 12,000 feet from sea level. Looking out the back window of the jeep started to make me sick to my stomach the further we ascended up the mountain, but, this is the place my parents talked me into going for Easter vacation. We always go on vacation for Easter, but, we usually go to The Bahamas, not the mountains. This year they wanted to try something new. We arrived at the cabin later that afternoon. The cabin was pretty big. The door opened to the living room and a left turn took you to the first room. Going straight through the living room you entered the dining/kitchen. On the right of the kitchen was a bathroom. Walking through the kitchen to the sliding glass doors took you out to the huge deck with a hot tub and a drained swimming pool. Another bedroom and bathroom was located upstairs. Upstairs the cabin didn’t have a flat roof like most houses, the rafters were exposed, and it was in the shape of a triangle it looked rather nice. The cabin was decorated with painted pictures of the mountains and forests. The furnisher was a bluish green color touched up with small white flowers and green and blue pillows. The fireplace was my favourite item in the house, it, was covered in grey and brown river rock. The owners of the cabin provided us with wood in the shed out back. My parents and my little brother, left about 3 hours after we arrived and unpacked, to the store to get some groceries. I decided to get in the hot tub while they were gone. I got into my bathing suit and stepped in the water and immediately pulled my foot out, I didn’t expect it to be that hot. The next time I started slowly and it wasn’t as bad. The water was almost unbearably hot once I submerged my whole body in it. I was in the tub for about 10 minutes when I saw a strange figure in the woods staring straight at me with big bright red eyes, but, not the kind you see in movies, these eyes were shaped like a crescent moon or the tip of a fingernail. I got out of the hot tub and grabbed my towel to dry off my face to erase any illusions I might be seeing, but, what I wished to be an illusion was still the red eyed figure staring at me. I blinked a couple of times and it was gone, just like that. I turned around and walked back into the house locking the door behind me. I never wanted my parents as bad as I did then. I walked into the bathroom and put my clothes on. I walked in the living room to the jacket closet and grabbed my jacket out, it, was getting chilly in the house. I turned to look out the door again and the figure was on the back deck staring in the sliding glass door. The figure was huge, it seemed to be maybe 10 foot tall. It looked like it walked on two legs instead of four. I could tell it was hairy from the small thin spikes jutting randomly from the creatures body. It ran for the door but failed to break it. I screamed and jolted to the front door, throwing it open and started running up the driveway. That’s all I remembered.
My stomach was growling and my mouth was extremely dry, almost like I haven’t had anything to drink in 2 months. I felt the outside of my pockets to see if I could feel my cell phone, but, I had no luck, all I could find was a half smoked pack of Menthol Cigarettes and a green and purple lighter that said Jessica along the flat side. Jessica was a tall slim girl that always wore bright, colourful clothes. At 18 years old her parents let her smoke as long as she kept up her own habit. Now this girl was lost in the woods with nothing to her name but a half smoked pack of cigarettes and a lighter that barely worked.
I can fell drops of water hitting my skin getting more and more often with each passing second, until, it was a steady drizzle. When I lifted my arm I could see ice pellets bouncing off the blue sleeve of my jacket. Great it was already cold and now it’s sleeting and raining. All the leaves had fallen off the trees leaving me with nowhere to take cover.
I decided that I wasn’t going to get anywhere if I didn’t move. The question was: Where do I go? I decided to go towards the sound of the rushing water to see if anyone lived on the water or if there was at least an empty cabin to wait till the weather got better.
