Just dinner

We finish our meal; the waiter takes away our plates and we sit
holding hands across the small round table. The world around us seems
to melt and all I see is the candle light flickering in your eyes, eyes
full of love, eyes that only see me. I don't try and suppress the huge
smile spreading across my face, I know I can be myself with you, you
know me better than anyone. The only problem is, we both know that soon
you will be leaving and we both know what that means, we just haven't
said it yet. I begin to understand that this is what the night is
about. The end.
You break my gaze and move as if to speak, but no words come. I wait,
unable to speak. Then suddenly you take my hand and begin. I don't know
what to expect or maybe I did I just didn't want to admit it.
You say that soon we will both be leaving, we will both be starting
afresh, new lives in a new home, with new people. You say that nothing
should tie us down to this place. What you mean is you want nothing to
tie you down. I was right, I did know what to expect.
But then, rather abruptly, your tone of voice changes, your expression
becomes soft and almost pleading. "But," you pause, "I want you to have
this."
You pull out a small velvet covered box and place it on the table. I
start to tremble. Slowly I open the box, really not knowing what to
expect, and inside the most beautiful gold ring set with two diamond
encrusted hearts entwined within each other, sits in the small slit in
the centre. I noticeably shake.
"It's a promise ring," you say, "it's my promise that one day, when we
are finished conquering the world, and doing what we need to do, I'll
find you again, and, if you still love me as I know I will love you, we
will live out the rest of our lives together." I start to cry. You look
into my eyes with such hope that I lose the power to speak. You place
the ring slowly upon my left ring finger and it fits perfectly, nothing
has ever fitted so perfectly in all my life. I wrap my arms around you
and you hold me as if the world is about to collapse around us, and
that's they way we stay. Always.
Just a dream I had.
