ONE WINTER'S NIGHT

Searching for a blanket,
As the Winter winds blow frantic,
Sending draughts across the carpet,
Of your under-fire abode.
Creatures scattering for shelter,
From this hellish helter skelter,
As poor nights go,this is a 'belter',
As you shiver to the bone.
The rafters upstairs creak,
And the windows threaten leaks,
As the gusts are joined by sleet,
What was that crashing sound outside?
Peering out, you look for damage,
But darkness reigns, so you don't manage,
You're glad you're not your four-wheeled carriage,
Outside on such a troubled night.
You pour yourself a dram,
And pray to God for peace and calm,
But not without some small alarm,
You'd swear the roof was coming down.
And so to bed to try and sleep,
You live in hope of slumber deep,
But no such luck, you feel you'll weep,
You long for Spring and all she'll reap.
