Mantra

"Whether totally misunderstood"
"Or simply outside of the loop"
"Because I am a genius"
As he recites every evening
Dawn has set upon the city
Or just thoughts for one's consciousness
The world, perceived differently
As life's relationships pass by
Your talent is the only thing that persists
Your own abilities you draw upon
Such as a gift from above
You have to think something of yourself
For anyone else to think something of you
Yet at the same time
You cannot be delusional in doing so
Or is that really a problem
When you're all alone
Waiting for the train
Early into the morning
The crowd is still on the floors
At the clubs or at the bars
You've picked a fine time
To be mugged or taken advantage of
And your empty, desolate life
That might not be so bad
Because there's heat in your pocket
Underneath your pant's belt
You could see his face
The shell's casing pop out
In slow motion
Would you get away with it though?
Would it really matter?
Economics of crime
To have saved an innocent life
A guilty life must be taken
We talk about prevention
Yet how realistic is that
Nothing will ever change
Yet for every midnight
Lit by poor fluorescent lighting
Sunlight floods the atmosphere
Along with new possibilities
Does the mantra change
Once life actually goes as planned?
Once promise turns into reality
Or do we simply give up?
Because it was all we'd wanted
Yet, desire remains as emotion
It wouldn't be human of you
To remain in place without change
