For a week now you have been placing
brick on mortared brick. Your mate
scoops off the surplus, scrapes his trowel
along the edge, and lightly taps
the hard dark surfaces.

Once you knocked the whole lot down;
re-stacked the bricks; again mixed sand,
lime and water; re-drew the lines
as though perfection lay in one
low wall around a bed of flowers
