A Sonnet for you
You spoke so soft, not daring catch my eye
And whispered "I don't love you any more."
You gave me back the diamond ring you wore
As the radio played a song of love gone dry.
We sat apart in silence, vision blurring.
My heart rebelled and fought your words of treason.
My mind screamed "NO" and cast for means or reason
To refuse the words I know I can't be hearing.
But your words were said - your love was dead
Despite the dreams of hope-filled hours.
So I'll mark love's grave with heart-stained flowers
And leave to learn to live in 'if' instead.
I couldn't cry the day we should have wed,
But there's years of tears waiting to be shed.
