EXT. SCHOOL GROUNDS - ESTABLISHING SHOT
The school seems perfectly ordinary, if a little empty at the
moment. There are no foreboding signs of what is to
come.
INT. SCHOOL BUILDING
The JANITOR is standing behind a desk that comes up to above
his waist, and is looking down at nothing in particular. The JANITOR is
a young man, but he looks nervous, tired and worried. He is constantly
fidgeting and avoids eye contact.
So?
(pause)
EXTERMINATOR
(standing up)
Nope, ya ain't got nuthin' there
JANITOR
Are you sure?
EXTERMINATOR
Who's the bug expert here?
JANITOR
It's just that they would have had enough time to make some kind of
nest or something. We haven't been in here for a long time since the
fire?
EXTERMINATOR
(slower)
Who is the bug expert here?
JANITOR
Well, you are I suppose, but isn't there?I mean, can't you
hear?that?sound?
The Exterminator gives the Janitor a very stern look, and he
trails off.
There are no bugs in this school; bugs are too good for this school;
bugs would be the superior lifeform in this school. There's a lot of
asbestos maybe, but no bugs. Anyway, I got other places to go to now,
so I'll leave my bill with you and?
JANITOR
But you didn't exterminate anything?
The Exterminator gives him another very stern look, and the
Janitor trails off again.
I'll leave the bill with you.
The Exterminator scribbles something on a slip of paper,
leaves it on the desk and walks off. The Janitor stays quiet and stares
at an invisible spot on the desk.
INT. SCHOOL BUILDING
The Janitor is in a deserted area of the school, sweeping up
while the children are in lesson. As he goes about his mundane task a
strange, ethereal noise takes him by surprise. He looks around for the
source of the noise, but finds nothing. A pupil walks by and is clearly
oblivious to whatever it is that the Janitor can hear.
INT. SCHOOL BUILDING
The children have all left. The background is deserted. The
Janitor and his boss are sitting in a small room.
Do you sometimes hear these strange noises when you're in the
school?
BOSS
Yeah, they're called kids.
JANITOR
No, it's like?sometimes there's a buzzing sound and sometimes
it's?
BOSS
(sitting up straight)
I can hear a sort of buzzing sound right now.
JANITOR
You can?
BOSS
Yeah?it's coming from?over there!
He points in the direction of the Janitor and recoils in mock
horror. He looks immensely amused. The Janitor tries to summon up the
same expression of pleasure, but fails miserably.
EXT. SCHOOL GROUNDS - DAY
The Janitor is walking around the empty school. As he walks
past the willow sculpture, a large twisting formation of branches
growing from the ground, the noises he heard earlier return, more
pronounced than ever. He stops and stares at the sculpture in
amazement.
INT. SCHOOL BUILDING
The Janitor and his boss are in the same room they were seen
in before. The Boss is reading a magazine, and the Janitor is staring
straight ahead, deep in thought.
(suddenly)
It's coming from the willow sculpture.
BOSS
(without looking up)
Hm?
JANITOR
Those noises I told you about. They're coming from the willow
sculpture.
BOSS
(still looking down)
Get rid of them, then.
JANITOR
I don't even know what they are.
BOSS
Probably just bugs or something.
(looks at his watch)
Have a good time with them anyway; I'm off.
JANITOR
Where? What am I supposed to do?
He ignores the question, drops his magazine on the floor,
stands up and walks out.
Where are you going? IT COULD BE ANYTHING!
But by this point the Boss has left and doesn't hear (or
chooses to ignore) the Janitor's momentary loss of
control.
EXT. SCHOOL GROUNDS - DAY
The Janitor stands in front of the willow sculpture for a
while. It towers above him. After a moment's deliberation, he walks
into the centre of the sculpture and we lose sight of
him.
BLACK.
The credits roll, but half way through they cut away for a
short shot of the willow sculpture with people crowded round. It seems
to have been turned into the scene of an emergency. People are staring
in horror at something we can't see and everyone looks generally
distraught. One person is being led away from the scene, towards the
camera, head in hands. Cut back to credits.
