Claude Monet, who suffered from poor eyesight, stepped back from his
canvas, which to his eyes only presented a hunched, ugly, green
figure.

"What do you think?" he asked his friend, Clemenceau.

"Well, it looks a little like one of your water gardens, Claude,"
Clemenceau replied.

Monet was brazenly perturbed.
