The details are a little vague now. It was only a dream after all.
The road meandered between the counties, one minute in Oxfordshire, the
next in Bucks. I drove the open-topped truck carefully through the
misty autumn dawn. There was a lad from the village sat next to me but
I didn't know his name. We pulled into an empty pub car park and I
switched off the engine. Several times I glanced up at the pub's
bedroom windows but the curtains never moved. There was little chance
of me being disturbed so early in the morning. The lad helped me unload
our cargo. We laid the thirty young men's bodies side by side along the
foot of the car park wall. Each body wore the uniform of a germen
soldier from the second world war. None of the bodies gave any
indication of how they'd died. "Perhaps they've been gassed," I
thought, "that would be funny." I turned to speak to the lad. "It's not
much compared to what they did, but at least it's something".
The lad asked me if I was going back to Oakley. "No" I said, "I'm going
to Ickford for a walk." I climbed back in the truck and started the
engine.
I don't know what happened to the lad.
