The Wedding (Not) Remembered
By Jean Calvin

A day of Festivities,
A day to remember for the ages
Locked away in photos, videos, and memories
Not remembered.
Two for the altar,
But only one is known to me.
My ring and commitment go to some stranger,
Smiling for her day in the sun
On which she’ll look back on in later years.
But I feign attention when they say
“I do.”
And they kiss me,
But I don’t love them.
And we walk out
Out of synch,
Amongst unknown faces.
Only in the back does something familiar reveal itself.
Sitting in the chair smiling and waving,
You’ve changed with everything else,
But at least I know it’s you,
For the face and the smile are the same.
All those pictures and recordings mean nothing.
For none of those memories I keep or remember,
Except for the one of you.
The one I keep safe.
