Chocolate
You were there from that first day that I
Was weaned. My mothers milk so easily
Forgotten. That first taste that melted soft
And warm in to my toothless, hungry mouth.
Swished 'round those virgin gums and then allowed
To trickle slowly down my eager throat.
Then at about that time of baby teeth
You came so solidly into my life;
One chunky square at a time not knowing
More was to come from each unending bar.
To get to you I crawled across the floor,
And stood when you were put high on the shelf.
One foot before another, step by step
I'd cross the carpet ocean just for you.
All through my learning how to read and write
You were my comfort through each lesson learned.
Then pocket money spent on bars of you
Would fuel the energy to climb a tree
Or kick a ball to win some schoolboy game.
My teenage years were full of rebel talk,
But you were there to soothe my raging ire,
Until one special girl with twinkling eyes
Just loved to slowly open up the box
And carefully select the favourite;
Allowing the delicious piece to melt
In her soft mouth before her yielding arms
Would welcome me in gratitude and love.
All through my student years you'd give me strength
To work the night in place of lectures missed.
Then qualified and fortified by you
I sailed successfully through interviews
That others found so difficult to pass.
The launch of my career, and I was dressed
In brand new suit with shoes so proudly shined.
Necktie of silk with brief case in my hand
In which you lay so snugly wrapped in foil,
Awaiting chance to 'suage my first day nerves
.
And then that special girl with twinkling eyes
Came back in to my life, and veiled in white
Agreed to share her mortal life with me,
And I with her my worldly goods endowed,
And share with her Ambrosia of the gods.
My middle years and business called the tune.
Each day the office organized my life,
And you were there to replace each meal missed.
And in the evening children wait to see
If in my pocket there were scraps of you.
And later, when their offspring came to call
They knew that grandpa always would supply
That sweetest sweet that ever they could want
.
When on my bones the years took their effect
The energy from you still kept me strong.
And now I'm back to where I once began.
Your creamy softness melts around my gums,
And I recall the stages of my life
When you were there to mark each passing time.
And in my dotage you will be my friend;
I'll taste your taste until my very end.
