Who put poison in me drink!' shouted out Beran
'how would you know if it was poisoned or not?' questioned the man in the dark hood. How was he going to explain this with out revealing his true Identity.
' because that man over there drank the same ale as me and he's about to collapse.' and as he said that he muttered a word under his breath and as he said, he collapsed.
'Very observant Mr?'
'Marean, I am a travelling merchant from south of here.' replied Beran quickly. 'well I think I'll leave if I'm not wanted.' and as he said that he walked out the door of the inn.
He walked down the road south and set up a camp. He used bits of bark and twigs for a small fire sought shelter from a great oak above him and thought about what he would do next either he would go back to the town for supplies and then flee to some where he found safe or he could risk going south till he met the loch. He decided that it was too much risk for too little gain. When everyone was asleep Beran crept back into town to gather supplies. He tried to open the door to the shop but it was heavily locked. Thinking of ways to get in he simply muttered 'harranshinha' and the doors locks disintegrated into dust.
He opened the door with a loud creek, and stole bread and cheese, with various vegetables and several bits of meat wrapped up in paper.
'Halt!' The dark hooded figure stood in the doorway with a strung bow pointing towards him. 'what are you doing here stealing from a shop?'
'I'm getting supplies for my journey so I can be out of your way' he continued packing his bag.
'Stop mage!
'How did you know?'
' I know a lot, like the way you and you're brethren committed treason against our race.'
'I did not obey their commands I was the only one who resisted.'
'How do I know I can trust you?'
' Because, I was going to keep it quiet and tell it to the king and try to keep it quiet until he herd it but it's a bit late to keep quiet now.'
'I see, well then we better get you to safety, I know somewhere where we can get everything cleared up between us, it's a couple miles west of here, but at least you'll be safe. So the two men fled down the road and over the fields, and over the dikes. After an hour of running over the hills and dodging the giant cliffs they reached a remote house. The house was small and made of brick with tiled roof on top and there was no light coming from the
glass-less windows. as they both approached the door the door opened and an eye poked through, out of the door came out a tall, slim man with a beard and blue piercing eyes and a short sword that hung by his waist.
'Ah, welcome back and who would be you're friend?'
'He's a mage, thing is he resisted there betrayal, now he's here I think he should know the bigger picture.'
'he would just be baggage he couldn't help us!'
'didn't you hear me say that he's a mage, he snap you in two if he wanted, what could you do to him' as flattered as Beran was by his description, he started to feel like a tool in their plans but he knew that he would not follow them his they asked him to do anything he didn't want.
'so mage, what's you're name and what business do you have.' asked the man who was already at the house.
'My name is Beran, and I am a mage of the tower, but tell me what are you're names?' Beran answered as if being interrogated.
'Well my name is Alastor' said the man in the hooded cloak.
'and my name is Drinarin' continued the man with the sword.
'So tell me' said Drinarin 'why do the mages betray us?' so then Beran then replied;
'The dark elves have recently discovered a book which contains the spells and rituals which were discovered by the first-born elves long ago, proposed to the mages that they would share their secrets in exchange for their allegiance. Blinded by human greed they accepted this offer but I do not understand what the dark elves would want their allegiance, their magic is far more advanced than ours, I believe that they want them for some ritual or something because the dark elves have never asked us for anything before.'
'Hhhhmmmm, I wonder what the dark elves would want with the mages? However, I think it would be suitable if we introduced what role we play in the world' Alastor started. 'we are a group of rangers, known as the 'elusive shadows', you probably have never herd of us, that's good because we would prefer to be as secretive as possible, and this is one of our out-posts. We are a defence against anything that poses a threat to the kingdom, these are dark times we live in.'
'So what do you want with me?' asked Beran
'well, we don't really require your services however it maybe wise to go to the loch there's not a lot of people there so you probably be hassled. I'll go with you if you want .'explained Alastor.
'well all I need is supplies and I'm off although I do not know these land so Alastor could you please come with me.'
'aye, I will we will leave at sun rise and gather all your belongings and we will say good bye to Drinarin here.' so the three lit a fire and spent the night talking about the dark elves and the mages and what they thought would be happening, they kept talking all night until they could no longer resist their fatigue.
