D is for Dead Stations

The echoes of the forthcoming train
precede the two yellow bulbs
illuminating the now untiled wall.
Signs would have read "Way Out"
or "Southbound - This Way" no
longer swing. Taken away in the first weeks
after closure when the driver would have announced:
"Sorry but trains will not be stopping here any more."
On board someone who'd not read
the posters might have stood up anyway
and looked confused as the train slowed
- revealing a lightless, greying hole with
only the memory of people, radials and station signs -
before powering on away.
