Couple in Southgate Pizza Express

The smashing crashing
comes from the kitchen,
while the two still take their time;
the waitresses,
limbs sore,
legs ready to buckle,
finish cleaning, re-stocking,
while their minds begin un-blocking,
but the two still finish their coffee;
while the catastrophy
that is a broken tray,
at the end of a long, hard broken day,
falls gently around their ears;
Their years spent together seem peaceful,
dreamy,
creamy as their coffee,
stuck like sticky toffee
in a relationship still sweet,
it's something hard to beat,
'till time comes crashing home,
they remember that they are alone,
in a restaurant, not at home,
so maybe it's time to go.
They sigh, no groan,
and meeting eye to eye,
getting to their feet
they smile their goodbye
and lift their coats from off their seats.
'thankyou.'
'Come again.'
they're told while passing smiling bar men,
They nod and reply they will,
Then they're gone to a warm, dark midsummers summer night,
That like their hearts is still.
