A (Real) Love Poem
I saw her some distance away,
Between us twenty feet of bubbling,
Rancid,
Toxic waste.
I cupped my hands
To my mouth, shouted
She threw a pair of rubber boots at me.
And something inside of me
Contracted for the first time.
The yellows and greens,
Hissed and screamed,
Yet I knew
There was no other way.
I sighed,
Took a deep breath,
Found my heart,
Became brave.
On my feet, I threw on the
Thick rubber boots.
Around my face,
I wrapped a rag.
One foot in,
And then another
My eyes stung from the fumes,
The acid ate at my legs,
But I kept my composure,
And treaded across the wasteland to meet her.
