Countless days have passed by since we first started to 'observe' her. We didn't find out much except for who she hung out with.
"Ummm... Guys?" Nate said.
We were all leaned up against the brick wall looking at Lennie and her friends messing around. It was like we were watching an addicting soap opera or something. Every day, before school, we would watch Lennie and her friends. We all observed their every move and even managed to find some things out about Lennie's friends as well! We all became so accustomed to it, if we were to go a day without 'watching' it would be like a smoker going about his or her day without a cigarette. We were addicted.
My friends became very supported of me. This all has brought us much closer together. I don't have to hide my every thought about her anymore.
"Guys!" Nate exclaimed. "Can you hear me?" He waved his hands in front of all our faces and shook his head.
"Oh, uh, Nate, sorry. What were you saying?" I asked, taking my eyes off of Lennie.
"Well, I was wondering, is this all were going to do for the rest of the year? Just look at her? Aren't you going to talk to her or anything?" Nate asked with bright eyes. "Come on, Andrew, she has the right to know."
I sighed. I wanted to tell her. I really did! But I was afraid. I was afraid of what she would say. I know she doesn't like me. And I didn't want to get rejected.
But before I could answer, something caught my eye. A boy was approaching her. My friends and I just stood there, watching more intently than before. My mouth dropped open as I continued to stare. Was that... her... boyfriend?
I saw how his face immediately brightened up when he saw her. Huh, I guess that's what I looked like when I saw her. All love- struck and dorky...
"Andrew! You never answered the question!" Nate said. He was totally unaware of what we were all staring at in awe.
"Oh, sorry dude. What?" I said but still keeping my eyes on that boy.
"Never mind," Nate said as he turned around. I saw his jaw drop and he swiftly looked back at me with big eyes.
"Andrew, you have competition! But I think he already won..." Anton said sadly.
"Hey, don't say that!" Darrin snapped. "Drew, still has a chance! Look at him..."
"He's a nerd. And your one of the cutest guys at our school, Andrew. I mean, according to the girls. Dude, just steal her away from him!" Jerry muttered as he continued to glare at the boy that was making Lennie smile. I really wished I was that boy...
"Guys, that's breaking the 'Brocode.' And it isn't right to begin with." I said sternly.
The 'Brocode' is a like the Ten Commandments for boys. The first commandment is "Thou shall not steal another guy's girl". And that's the one rule I'd be breaking if I tried to take Lennie away from the dork.
"C'mon, Andrew! That's 'our' brocode. It doesn't count. Because he isn't part of our brotherhood." Anton exclaimed. "You have to take her before it's too late!"
"But our 'brocode' clearly states 'Thou shall not steal another guy's girl'. Am I correct?" I said in a smart- alec manner.
"Dude, it's 'Thou shall not steal another brother's girl'! You've got it all wrong! It's just that we can't steal a girl from any of of our 'brothers'. So that means you can steal Lennie away from that blonde kid!" Darrin spat out in one breath.
"Okay, okay," I said, "but what if she does like him back? What if she loves him? What if-" I began.
"You won't know for sure unless you try. Now go. Right now!" Jerry exclaimed.
My friends patted me on the back and encouraged me to go right up to her and start talking, but something made me stop. I saw Lennie's face brighten up as the little nerd got closer and hugged her.
Ouch. I'm not a man known to cry, but that hurts. Seeing the girl of your dreams in another man's arms.
She's happy. I should've known. He makes her happy... I know that I will never forget about her. If I vowed to stop loving her, I would just be lying to myself. But the least I can do is keep this all a secret. I don't want her to find out because it will do nothing but confuse and hurt her. I never want to hurt Lennie... She will never know that I am in the shadows. She will never know that I'll always be there. She will never know that I am hopelessly in love it her...
