The Magic Potion
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A young girl looks up at the clouds as she smoothes a blanket over
the
green grass. Clouds float by slowly and deliberately. Her hand
reaches up to touch the clouds that elude her grasp. In her
disappointment, she gets up and walks toward a nearby brook. She
kneels
by the edge of the brook and looks down at her reflection in the
water.
"Who is that beast?', she whispers to her own reflection .
"It's you!", she hears a voice say. She looks around to find the
source
of this voice. Suddenly, a beautiful woman all in white appears
before
her. She smiles and holds a basket of wildflowers.
"Who are you?", the girl asks .
"I am a witch. I made a special potion just for you. I see you
here
often so sad and forlorn. I want to help you see yourself as you
really
are."
"You can't help me. It is too late.", she replies to the witch.
The witch looks down at the large basket of wildflowers . She puts
her
arm around the girl as they walk through the field of flowers.
"Don't you know it's all an illusion! No one is perfect. Only
kindness
lives on in the minds of friends who love you.", the witch says
softly
as she continues walking.
"Kindness is something that I do. It comes naturally and people take
it
and walk away. I wish someone would turn around and see me."
"What do you want them to see?", asks the witch curiously.
"I can't say. Perhaps me.", the girl answers softly.
"You exist in the world. Maybe you just do not see yourself as
others
see you. Just take a drink of this special potion and you will soon
see
the truth about yourself. Don't be afraid.", says the witch as
she
offers the potion to the girl.
"I don't want to see !", the girl responds.
"What are you afraid of, child? Are you happy now? You don't look
happy
to me. Just take a taste of my potion. You shall come to no harm,
I
promise.", asks the witch.
The witch hands over the potion to the girl. It smells delicious and
she
takes a taste. It tastes as delicious as it smells, so she takes
another taste.
"This is good! Are you sure it will help me?", she asks the
witch.
"I want to believe you, Witch. I want to know beauty and love. The
sun
is warm yet my face has the feel of marble. I open my arms in
welcome,
yet the world looks the other way.' I'm not at all sure that a
fragrant
breeze can take over - I'm sure it would roll over the silky green
hill
or something I almost tumble over into nothingness. I can bend and
not
break. The flowers are created by nature and only here for a
short
while. I must thrive in this field of flowers. I hear the bubbling
of
water over rocks and watch the scurrying of squirrels gathering
acorns
to eat. My bulging heart causes me to paint the meadow with shades
of
yellow, blue and azure; tint it with reds, mauves and pinks, then
provide highlights of white and cream.", the girl replies, looking
up
hopefully at the witch. Her words break up between sobs.
"Look at this field of flowers, child.", says the witch soothingly
to
the girl.
"I find such peace here. I feel beauty among the wildflowers."
"You shall be granted peace and beauty for your love will be
returned.
Not today, not tomorrow but in another time, and in another
existence.
You will find your happiness, do not fear.", the witch declares.
"I am no longer sad, with your magic potion, I shall find myself as
I
truly am.", the girl replies, smiling.
"I have a present for you, child."
The witch bends down and plucks a beautiful flower from the field.
She
offers it to the girl. The girl brings it to her cheek and smiles.
She
lies down on the grass and falls asleep. Spring passes and the
flowers
grow around her, Summer brings the flowers to their glory, Autumn
brings the sunset of their lives and Winter their death. She lies
among
the flowers now, death calling her home. Her body returns to the
earth
and the elements until a hundred years from now, the flowers will
call
her back to life again.
