Sewing with friends

We set off at ten with notebook and pen
plus scraps of fabric and thread.
"Bring a packed lunch and a mug for your rea"
the invitation had said.
We wore layers of clothes on a freezing cold day.
Knowing what church halls are famous for,
we were not surprised when we opened the door.
A sub-zero coldness that made our teeth chatter.
No heaters were on, that was the matter.
We ran round the hall flicking the switches
in an effort to warm the place up.
The solution, we thought, was on with the kettle
and brew up a cup, that warmed us up.
The tables and chairs were neatly arranged
as more ladies joined the group.
One lady at the table was quilting through a hoop.
An Hawain applilque was the project of the day and our tutors were
helpful indeed.
We snipped with our scissors and stitched with our thread, sharing pins
with those in need.
Some found it easy , others found it tricky
to tackle the project that day.,
At 1pm it was time for lunch and we cleared all the fabric away.
There were cuppa soups here and sandwichesthere
and we chatted and laughed till lunchboxes were bare.
We removed our layers as the hall heated up and by 3 pm it wastime for
another cup.
We were pleased with our work for the day and it was soon time to put
the tables away.
We said our goodbyes, until next time.
I think I'll make a cushion out of mine.
