To some, becoming famous is a fantasy, something you can only dream
of. It is seemingly perfect. Everyone envies you for your glamorous
lifestyle and you get paid for doing something you love. However, fame
comes at a great price. Many of you will not realise the sacrifices and
problems many celebrities have to face. Celebrities you thought had the
perfect life.
Take a look at American actress Drew Barrymore. She became famous at
the age of seven in the blockbuster movie "ET" and went on to star in
such hits as "Never been Kissed" and "Charlie's Angels". However, her
road to fame was not so easy as it looked. Drew spent most of her teen
years trying to get over her addiction to drink and drugs which could
have killed her. As well as this, she had to cope with her face being
splashed across every tabloid newspaper with "exclusive" stories on her
personal life, the majority of which, not being true. Fortunately, Drew
got her life back on track, but it was certainly, not an easy
ride.
Other celebrities have not been so lucky. Macaulay Culkin, child star
of the Home Alone movies was a child wonder. He starred in his first
movie at age 4 and currently has an estimated fortune of $17 million.
However, the movies Macaulay starred in after Home Alone became worse
and worse. He was no longer acting in five star hits but in movies that
flopped, the moment they hit the box office. Many people simply weren't
interested in him, as he was no longer the cute kid from the movies. He
gradually began to lose his popularity and sunk into a long depression.
All he had done was grow up.
It is not only child stars that have a tough time in the limelight.
Mel C, former member of the Spice Girls is a particular favourite of
the tabloid newspapers. Her weight gain gave her the label "Chubby
Spice" and in an attempt to become thinner and more healthy, she was
described as "anorexic" by the tabloids. This issue has also arisen for
her fellow Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham. Victoria was dubbed "Skeletal
Spice" by critics who saw her as too skinny and came to the conclusion
she must have a weight problem. As well as being mocked by the tabloids
she is constantly receiving hate-mail from people threatening to kill
her and Brooklyn, her son making them fear for their lives.
Is fame really worth it? The experiences of these four people show
that fame can seriously damage a healthy lifestyle which in some cases
may even lead to death. Most celebrities feel that they are forced to
keep up the perfect image and if this means sacrificing their health,
then this is a risk they have to take. On the other hand, some people
have no problem with fame at all and go through their lives not having
to worry about any of the things ordinary people do. Is fame really
worth the risk? You decide.
