It's Not What It Seems

If you go out for a quiet drink
Don't try to interpret the nod or the wink
Sometimes they're there, sometimes they're not
It's not what it seems, or it seems what it's not
Playing the machines, or just playing pool
Whatever you think, they're not playing the fool
Don't dare to blink, or unhinge your look
A turn of the head, and the fool's been took
Sometimes they're there, sometimes they're not
It's not what it seems, or it seems what it's not
C.D.'s to order, burnt off today
Under the table; don't ask, don't say
If your contraband is cigarette
Just move your eyes, and he'll go get
Sometimes they're there, sometimes they're not
It's not what it seems, or it seems what it's not
Contraband man gone out to the car
Checking his stock for the landlord's cigar
Mobile, mobile, ringing true
Doing business now, but he'll get to you
So, if you go out for a quiet drink
Don't try to interpret the nod or the wink
'Cause sometimes they're there
And sometimes they're not
It's not what it seems
Or it seems what it's not.
