Puppy Love
He stares at me,
Wanting to play,
I dare not look,
Or he will get his way.
On me, he keeps an eye,
He knows I will notice
The slightest cry.
Now and then, he gives a whimper
I try to ignore him,
And hold my temper.
He watches closely as I dress,
By the shoes I wear he can guess
Whether or not with him I will play
Or if he will be left alone today
With his gaze, he holds me still
Knowing I'll soon bend to his will.
What is the use, I say to the wall?
I put down my work and pick up the ball.
Rush to the door
As fast as he can,
I follow more slowly
Ball in my hand.
His tail wags
His eyes gleam
He has got his way
Again, it seems.
We play and play
For heavens sake
How long will it take?
To wear out a dog named Jake.
