We met on my first day of school. I was petrified, but she showed me
the pencil draw with ease. We hit it off immediately, and remained best
friends for many years... and many years to come.
I remember when we were six. She arrived at school wearing sunglasses.
When I asked her why she was wearing sunglasses in the dark classroom,
she replied "I'm blind." We both laughed, and she let me wear her
sunglasses for the rest of the day.
But we didn't always get along. I remember when I brought my 'Little
Mermaid' sound book into school, and everyone wanted to play with it. I
eventually got tired of everyone trying to read it, so I put it in my
bag and refused to let anyone read it... even her.
I came back five minutes later to find that my book had disappeared
from my bag. I told the teacher and we looked everywhere for it...
until I spotted her across the playground, sitting in the corner,
reading it. At first I was angry, but after I sat down with her and we
read it together, I remembered that we were best friends, and I had no
reason not to share it with her.
I remember when that new boy came to school. She talked to him more
than she talked to me... well... that's how it seemed, but now I think
of it, she was only trying to make him feel welcome. He threw a 'Peter
Pan' party, and she got to be his Wendy. She was so excited. But I
wasn't invited. She tried to get me invited, but the new boy refused,
saying that he didn't know me. Luckily, we found an invitation on the
cloakroom floor, so I went in the end. The new boy ended up annoying
her, so we just sat in the tree house laughing at silly things.
As we got older, things got harder, but we still stuck together. I
remember how I couldn't do my times tables properly, and every Friday
when we were tested on them, she let me copy you, and I let her copy my
English work. We got away with so much.
By the time we were nine, we began to drift apart. We were still good
friends, but we had other friends to entertain. Still... most of the
time, we sat together and talked. Mostly laughing about funny stuff
that happened at school.
I remember one lunchtime; some girls made up a story about a ghost
haunting the bathroom. We were trying to prove to the boys that there
weren't any ghosts, so we went into the girls' bathroom, and they went
into the boys' bathroom. "NOTHING!" she yelled, hoping that the boys
would hear. But all we got in return was "Woooooo!" The boys were
trying to scare us, but it didn't work. Suddenly, we heard our
headmaster outside. "What's going on?" she shouted, and we rushed out
of the bathroom. When we got outside the door, the boys were halfway
through telling our headmaster that we had told them that there were
ghosts in the bathroom. Our headmaster wasn't impressed, and he made us
stand outside his office. She looked at me, I looked at her, and we
burst out laughing.
Another time, I borrowed her roller skates, and I wasn't very good. Her
drive was very steep, and being the silly person I am, I decided to
roll down there. Unfortunately, I slipped and slid right under her
mother's car, which was parked in the driveway. We nearly wet ourselves
laughing... until I managed to say, "Get me out!" between
giggles.
Before we knew it, it was the end of primary school. We were nearly
high school students, and it had all felt like it had come too soon. We
went on a school trip to say goodbye to all of our classmates that were
going to different schools. Luckily, we were going to be attending the
same high school in September.
During our school trip, we had so much fun. We both stayed up until
about three in the morning, talking about absolute nonsense. One night,
we peered out of the window, to be greeted by a big blue cloud in the
shape of a rear end. We talked about that for hours. Another night, we
were pondering over who 'Joe Bloggs' was.
Yet another night, when our other friends stayed up, we thought that
the boys had their room above ours, so she used Natalie's shoe to bang
on the ceiling. The boys didn't respond, and everyone went back to
sleep. She tied Natalie's shoe to the bunk bed. It seemed like a good
idea at the time, but in the morning, when we couldn't get it off, and
we had to untie the knot really quickly before Natalie woke up... it
seemed a bit silly.
Then began our high school days. I only got to spend three years out of
five with my best friend. Our art lessons were hilarious. I remember
when I put paint in Robert's journal and the thought it was her. He put
a big red blob of paint on her forehead, and then discovered that it
wasn't her... and our music lessons. When we always had that practice
room with no windows, so when Rob turned the light off, there wasn't
any light. We used to play murder in the dark, being the immature
people we were. We did that until one day, when the teacher walked in
and wondered what the hell we were doing, crawling around on the
floor.
Claire - There are so many memories, and although I haven't typed all
of them out, I will never forget them. I'll never forget you. I still
can't believe that I moved away and left you behind, only able to see
you once a year. You're still my best friend, and always will be. I
think about you every day, and I wish that I could share all the good
things that happen in my life with you. I wish we could talk to each
other face to face again. You're the greatest friend ever, and I miss
you so much. Please, never forget me.
