Chapter 4
'Hey, you made me jump.' I said leaning up to kiss Rob,
'Oops, sorry, only wanted to see my girl.' he said, smiling, 'So, where you off to, I thought you ate with the others?'
'I do, I was just going to Mr Brazen.'
'Great, I'll come with you.' he said, pulling me forwards.
'No, its ok, I will come back later.' I said, extra loud so that Conner might have been able to hear me. Rob looked at me, then spun round and walked back. I managed to catch Conner's eye,
'Later' he mouthed, I guess he knew what had happened. I went back to the others, and was surprised when Rob asked if he could join us,
'Sure, if its ok with these,' I said, looking at them,
'Fine by me,' Markus said, ever since Rob started going out with me, he had attempted to be mates with Rob, but its wasn't a mutual feeling, as Rob had told me many times, in private.
We quickly ate our lunch, then wondered round, looking for Markus's sisters, as they needed a ride home, and as per usual, he forgot to tell them where to meet. I took the opportunity to sneak away, and find Conner. I lied again, and told Rob that I was going the toilet, and the others that I was going to see Mr Brazen.
I hurried down the corridor, hoping that no one else would stop me. I reached home room, to see that Conner was alone inside the room, still eating his lunch, he's a slow eater I thought.
'Hey, what you doing all alone?' I asked, pulling up a chair by him,
'Waiting for you to show up,' he replied, before stuffing his mouth full of sandwich.
'Sorry about that, I got away as soon as I could,' I apologised,
'Its ok, I saw what happened, anyway, have you thought about what I asked you this morning?' he asked, still eating his sandwich,
'Yeah, listen, no matter how I feel about Rob, we could never happen.'
'I'm not saying that if you weren't with Rob then you should be with me, I just want to see you happy, and I don't think that your happy at the moment,' he said, leaning closer to me.
'I felt something last night, I cant say that I didn't, and maybe if I wasn't with Rob something could happen, but I'm not single, but I still want to be mates, that would be cool.' I finished smiling, but before I could think about anything else, he was leaning closer, I could feel the touch of our lips, the closeness of our breath, the warmth of his skin, and I couldn't resist the feeling any more. We sat there, with no interruptions for a few minutes, I was blocking the outside world out, and letting the feelings come out, this is what I wanted.
I walked out of the room about 10 minutes later, still thinking about the kiss, it was unlike anything I had ever shared with Rob, maybe because it was so wrong, but I couldn't help it, I was totally crazy about Conner, and I was going to have to do something about Rob, that's the part I was dreading, with Rob being so popular, me splitting with him might cause some bad feelings from the rest of the jocks and cheerleaders.
I managed to keep my mouth shut when I got back to the group, and surprised to find that Rob was still with them.
'Hey, can I ask you something Gypsy?' he said when he saw me coming over to them. We walked over to the corner, and he took out a piece of paper,
'This address, there is a party on tonight, I was told that I could invite you and that one of your mates could come as well. So how about it, feeling like a party animal?' he joked,
'Wow, sure I haven't got anything else on, what time?' I completely forgot about the incident I needed to talk to him about,
'Its all on there, I should be there early, it's a pool party, but if you don't want to, you don't have to swim, I mean if you feel like an outsider,' he started,
'Its fine, I will be there, and I wont leave till the cops come,' I joked, he smiled,
'Good to see that you are trying to mix with the more popular kids, not that your mates aren't cool or anything,'
'Its ok, I know what you mean.' I had to understand him, his girlfriend was cheating on him.
'I will see you then, bye.' he leant down, he to was tall for his age, nearly reaching 6 foot, he towered over me. We kissed, then he walked off, waving to the others as he walked off. I followed him, then sat down, and joined in the conversation about aliens, and if they exist or not.
When I got home that night, after I had not waited for Conner. At lunch, after we kissed, I told him that I would see him on Saturday night, and nothing more was said. I was still pondering about the kiss through dinner, and whilst I was getting ready to go to the party. My Mom wasn't pleased to hear about my plans, but she agreed that she wouldn't wait up for me, and since it was a Friday night, she told me to be careful, and that it wouldn't happen again any time soon.
Once I had packet my bag, I quickly signed on, to see if Lynzi might have sent me an email, since I told her all about Conner yesterday, but I had to go before she could tell me how she felt. It turned out that she hadn't sent me one, but she probably would soon. Suddenly, my phone started ringing, I ran over and picked it up, Rob was phoning me,
'Hey, are you still going tonight?' he asked,
'Yeah, my moms let me out of the house.' I laughed,
'so, do you want a ride over there, I mean we could pick Vicky up on the way.' I had text him before to say that I was bringing her,
'Sure, that would be great since I don't have a clue where I'm going.' he laughed,
'I will pick you up in about 15 minutes, that ok with you?'
'Sure, I'm already, see you then'
'Bye,' he made a kissing noise, I laughed, then mimicked him. We hung up, then I ran downstairs to tell my Mom.
'Honey, you know how I feel about that boy,' she said once I had explained what was now happening,
'I know, but he offered, and I don't really know where I'm going.'
'What! I thought you said that you knew the person, did you lie to me Gypsy?'
'No, I know her from school, I just don't know where she lives.'
'Fair enough, be home before sunrise please, you know how your brother worries when you go out.' she was right, Jack always worried, which is why I told him that I was staying with Vicky, and that he could call me at any time.
I waited for the sound of his BMW, and shot out the door when I did. I got in the car, leant over and kissed Rob, as I did that, my phone went off, it was Vicky,
'Hey, you ready then, were on our way,' I said as Rob pulled out,
'Go straight there, I will meet up with you, my mom said that unless I go in my own car, and not some high school jocks, then I can go, otherwise, I cant go, and I was not letting this chance pass me.'
'O alright, see you at the party then.' I said, we said goodbye, and hung up.
About 10 minutes later, we pulled up at the house, it was massive, and had a double garage, and a massive front lawn, no wonder these people had a pool as well. We waited for about 5 minutes for Vicky to come, then we all went in together. Robyn answered the door, and welcomed us in, careful not to give me the dirty look she normally does. Rob probably talked her into this. I stepped into the hall way, well, I would call it a hall way in my house, here it looked like a cathedral. It had high ceilings, and a chandelier hanging from the centre. The walls were a cream colour, and had been glossed. There were paintings all around the room, and tables holding flowers, and other objects that were either gold or pink. She showed us through to the back, and as I walked through the house, I felt lost, and amazed at the same time. She pointed the changing rooms out for us, and left us to it. Rob gave me a kiss then left me and Vicky to change.
'Well, this is it, hopefully we can pass for cool people tonight, this might finally boost your confidence.' I told Vicky as I undressed behind a curtain. I had my new bikini on, it was red o the top, and red with pink lines on the bottoms. I looked down at my body, I wasn't fat, but I could have been thinner. I stepped out of the changing room, and waited for Vicky to come out. When she did, I realised how unaware of my best friend I was. Ever since we were little, she was always on the larger side, which lowered her confidence, but now she was as thin as me, and toned, and tanned.
'Wow, you look amazing, when did you lose weight?' I asked, still with my jaw on the ground,
'Last winter, when I told you I was going on a diet, I finally stuck to it.' she said smiling. Every diet she had tried, she always failed, I was happy for her, and we took one look at each other, then walked out.
As I left the changing rooms, I saw what could have passed for an Olympic sized, indoor swimming pool, with deckchairs, tables and a diving board. Vicky and I walked over to Rob, who I saw was getting ready to dive.
'Hey, you look hot!' he said when he saw me, 'Are you going to dive as well?' he asked us,
'Not now, but I will laugh when you fall in and make a fool of yourself,' I said, wrapping sarong around my waist.
'Fine, spoil sports, watch a pro in action.' he said, getting ready to jump. He looked like a pro as well, not making a fool of himself, and he looked so sexy, how could I choose between him and Conner, they were so different, and yet, I liked them both. Great.
About an hour later, I was swimming around in the pool, playing water polo. I was on Robs and Vicky's side, and we were winning.
'Yeah, one more point to us.' Rob said, slapping this other guys hand in a high five. He had been like that all night, competitive.
'Hey, drinks are here,' head Robyn say,
'Hey, you coming?' Rob asked me,
'Sure, I have been gasping all night.' I said as he helped me out the pool. He poured me a drink of punch, and we stood there talking to some cheerleaders for about 10 minutes.
'Hey, can I talk to you for a minute?' Vicky asked me, 'its really important.' the tone of her voice told me that she wasn't joking, so I followed her.
'Do you know what your doing, there is alcohol in that, and your ride home is drinking, same as you.' she said pointing to the punch,
'Hey, relax, its fine. There isn't any alcohol in this, your worked up over nothing, just chill.'
'Chill! How do you expect me to do that, my friend could be drunk and so could her ride home, we are leaving now, both our parents will kill us if we get drunk.'
'Hey, I'm not leaving, and Rob is not drunk.' I told her, 'now just go and get a drink yourself, and see that there is nothing to worry about.' I said, walking off,
'Look, this is just about you becoming popular, you know that there is alcohol in that drink, but you don't want your precious little boyfriend to hate you, well don't blame me when he hurts you.' she said, storming out. At this point, all conversations apart form ours had ended, and I was the centre of attention. This was not good, I thought, she shouldn't have stormed off, its not like her.
'Hey, just forget about her, she will get home and realise that she is just being stupid, come on, the party is still on. He said, pulling me towards the pool.
'Should I drop you in?' he asked, holding me close to the pools edge,
'No!' I shouted,
'Sorry, I couldn't hear that' he joked, laughing,
'No! put me down,' I told him,
'O look, my hands slipping.' he said throwing me into the pool,
'No!,' my voice filled the room, along with the voices of other young lovers, teasing each other. I hit the water, and sank straight to the bottom. Quickly running out of air, I shot up to the top,
'I'm going to hurt you,' I shouted at Rob, climbing out the pool. He quickly ran away, and for the next 10 minutes, I was chasing Rob around the room, trying to push him in the pool.
'Ok people, party's over. My parents are coming home, and I got to clean up.' Came Robyn's voice from the kitchen.
'Well, I guess that's her polite way of telling us to get out.' Rob joked, surrendering himself to me at last. I didn't push him in, but I pushed him away and pretended to storm of into the changing rooms. I changed quickly, and sat outside waiting for Rob. As I sat there, I thought of Vicky, and how strange it had been. She had been strange with me for a while now, not spending as much time with me.
'Hey, not interrupting your thoughts am I?' Rob asked, taking my hand. The touch of his body, the warmth of his hand wasn't the same as last night with Conner, the feeling of closeness wasn't as strong, and the mutual feeling wasn't there, and I think that Rob also sensed this,
'Hey, what's wrong you haven't been yourself for a while now?' he asked, opening the door of his car for me.
'Nothing, honest.' I told him, and the rest of the drive was silent, until we reached the country roads.
