Several Times

Several times you've let the word
slip from your lip like your mouth's
too full of vowels and consonants.
I've let it pass as if my ears are used to this
plugged with sweetnesses, clogged in the canals
with bill and coo.
I've looked away so you can't see
the way my eyes have brimmed and spilled
because they can't contain this wanting you.
Or worn my shades to shy away
pulled the brim of my borrowed hat down low
like I can shade myself from all the brightness
of I Love You.
