I Saw an Angel

I walked across a land barren and bleak
stone cracked fields of grey and brown
and the empty shells of past glory
a sun baked hell of dismembered cities
I came across a crowd of misery
unfocused dismayed lost sight and sound
and resting in the damp and sludge
small aspects of a diamond truth
in the light of a simple star
a wanderer drift of magnificence
rays of a silver peace
and depth of joy
sparked through the black
I saw an angel
pale and dim
in the dying light
I saw her fall
into the sea
and out of sight
a glimpse of green in the valley floor
I climbed to the mountain high
the snow capped peak and bitter wind
and spread my wings to fly
I glided through a cloud of sleep
a dream and dance of pure delight
I floated on a midnight wind
and in the valley did alight
through trees of trust and grasses high
I lazed in beds of silken snow
I ate the apple from the tree
and sheltered where the waters flow
the garden flourished beauty bright
and weaved a whisper through my mind
and struck me from the garden gates
and left me bleeding, deaf and blind
I crawl in gullies dank and dark
and slipe into the blackened sea
I drown in lakes of flame and fire
now nothing more if left of me
I once walked across this land
and tasted the forbidden fruit
this land has gone and so have I
abandoned my divine pursuit
