MARK

Everybody needs a mate - a friend indeed
To chew the fat or share a beer
Someone to lean on when times get rough
When your world crashes and you've had enough.
If being on your own sometimes feels too solitary
And you need a friend - just to pass the time
Share a cigarette - or talk about girls
Then I've got just the mate - a friend indeed.
We've seen some bad times and shared some good
Laughed in the face of adversity and shed some tears
For partners past and present, too numerous to mention
But a few - we loved them dearly with all good intention.
Now they've gone and we sometimes reminisce
At what might have been but never will be
We hope that the future will bring us happiness
Love, children and perhaps some tenderness.
But I've got a mate who's solid and true
Been my best man and usher too - no more I hope
Occasions of matrimony but beery times and party nights
Barbeques in the summertime with chicken delights.
But as the years have passed us by
And were both a bit wiser and just a bit older
We can still chew the fat and share a beer
Because everyone needs a mate - like my mate Mark.
