the hitchhiker

on route 11

standing alongside the road

you will find a man

a man with no name

address unknown

he carries no wallet

no license

no photograph

no proof of anything

only his suit and a briefcase

he’ll give you a smile

and ask for a ride

but to where?

perhaps here, perhaps there

to him it doesn’t matter

perhaps he isn’t going anywhere
perhaps he never was
just passing through
a being between places

stuck in some twisted limbo
waiting for a destination
that doesn’t exist
