Prologue
“Do you want to hear something funny, Jack?....a confession of sorts”
“sure” he said wearily, he was obviously feeling drowsy, she had to act fast.
“You didn’t see me first after all. I clocked you, well before you ever even noticed me”
“What?...I saw you the second you walked into that bar – “
“No I mean earlier – “
“But I – “
“You were so convinced that you saw me first and when you said it, it sounded so romantic – so I let you believe it and tell everyone. But I saw you first. I saw you on the tube”
“I didn’t take the tube that night I – “
“I know, but in the day you did”
“I don’t understand”
“Don’t you? Remember how we used to say it was weird that we lived so close to each other and worked so close to each other and never seen each other? And how we were probably on the same tube or bus at some point without knowing it? Well we were.”
“When I....Kat, I don’t understand.”
“I was sitting down the end of a carriage and the tube was about to take off and you jumped through the door just in time – you were distracted and messy but I couldn’t take my eyes off you. You leaned by the door reading the paper and didn’t look up or even notice me. And I kept staring and was listening to Lana Del Ray y’know, “it’s you, it’s you, it’s all for you” and then your stop came and you rushed off and I watched you walk past the window and down the platform and thought. He’s. Gone. And then the next time I saw you I spilt my pint on you.”
“And knocked mine over if I remember rightly” he smiled broadly and the winced at the pain.
“And I thought it’s over – it never began and it’s over”
Chapter one
In the beginning there were five of them. Dan,Jim, Max, Roxy and Kat and it made sense at first. They were 23, out of uni longer than they cared to mention and bored, bored out of their brains. Nothing was working out the way they planned. Max hadn’t made that ground breaking movie, Dan hadn’t got very far with his band, Jim’s art was considered mediocre at best, Roxy’s dancing was fine – her dance teachers words. And Kat, well acting apparently hated her. After a year of intensive auditions for drama schools, she had not got any further than one recall that had gone nowhere. Life was shit; they thought it was all over. Only certain people, of a certain disposition feel that their lives are over at 23, these were five such people.
