NEIGHBOURS
'R'
HELL
'Neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours' is how the song
goes
But for a vast majority of decent people their lives are full of
woes
Let's take a look at my street but it could be anywhere
A slipping crumbling social breakdown leading to despair
Big Denzil at number ten likes to hold these all night parties
Where dealers hands out drugs like they're only kid's Smarties
Now Ron and Doreen at number twelve argue all day and night
And poor John the punch-drunk fighter is reliving an old fight
Colin in his ice cream van with that very irritating jingle
Is going to see his floozy who has told the DSS she's single
Old Nellie across the road has turned her home into a zoo
And we call her grandson Bostick because he's always sniffing
glue
Every front garden for miles around has its very own scrap car
And it's not much fun believe me shopping at my local fortress
Spar
Broken bits of glass bottles, twinkle in the sun and look so
pretty
These are what are known locally as the 'diamonds of inner
cities'
Graffiti on a house door spells out that we have a pervert living
here
But he doesn't anymore 'cause a couple of locals made him
disappear
There's a pack of dog's, semi wild, roaming the kid's playground
And Danny Wood who mugged old Jenny, for a lousy stinking pound
Children as young as five are torching anything that will burn
It's really not the sort of thing these toddlers should have to
learn
A fly tipped mattress soiled and stained God knows where it's
been
Is becoming a major attraction as the neighbourhood trampoline
A hundred radios all at full blast from Abba to Frank Zappa
Are competing in a decibel war with Mr. B the New York rapper
What sounds like rapid gunfire suddenly crackles across the sky
I close my eyes and hope and pray that it's not my time to die
Believe it or not this is England on an estate not that far away
So count your blessings daily and hope my world don't come your way
