ELASTIC BAND

i joined a little band one day
when still in kindergarten
we made so many cute mistakes
but never begged one's pardon
i played kazoo, pete banged a drum
and joe did slidey whistlin'
"pink crayon" played the day away
though none but us was listenin'

we had a band in junior high
we thought it was colossal
compared to what we did before
you'd hardly call it docile
i played guitar with pete on drums
and joe on bass a-throbbin'
"red engines" played the day away
with our three heads a-bobbin'

we had a band when out of school
and finished with our finals
we went into the studio
and ended up on vinyl
i was a drunk with pete on coke
and joe hallucinatin'
"blue devils" played the day away
a legend was creatin'

we had a band in middle age
and jazz we were a-playin'
we strictly were traditional
there was no messy strayin'
i played the flute with pete on vibes
while joe on sax did work it
"grey grandpa" played the day away
upon the cruise boat circuit

we have a band until this day
in convalescent glory
the nurses shake their heads at us
and call us desultory
