Between Friends

'I'm happy as I am,' you said.
I accepted that after everything I had done badly,
All I could do was try to impress you,
Wear you down subtly after that.
Of course that was all for nothing.
I notice you've found someone,
Turning those love songs you hum
From sweet to bitterly ironic,
A reminding push on that knife in the back of my heart.
Maybe because I'm still here,
Reachable, dedicated, boring,
Rather than the new, the taken,
Though not that different.
And now I see your predatory claws.
I see the way you reap the attention,
The transparent girly chats.
So leave the loyal friend to the ages,
The one who got up everyday just to see you,
The one who did all he could to make you happy.
I'm sure you will be for a time,
Though those words will sting me forever;
'I'm happy as I am'.
