It was the second or third time
that I visited your house
and I scrabbled around in my mind
as I picked out the letters
of the game of scrabble
which was absent from our fated evening
some days previously.
I knew but didn’t say
a short combination of words:
not high-scoring, not obscure,
not filled with underused letters.
I chose instead to play for a high score,
though in this case
we drew
two hundred and two
to two hundred and two.
I played most of the letters I had
but a few were left, the game unfinished
for some time, while I rearranged the letters.
They always returned the same combo
and I knew I was

IN (2 points)
LOVE (5 points)
