EDWARD EAGER
Edward Eager teaches school. He's sometimes daft, but not a fool.
He keeps his pupils well amused - to know the facts, they are
enthused,
for Edward grabs their interest; they want to learn and try their
best
to absorb the words of their dear tutor, so they'll be clever in the
future.
When in the playground he must be, Edward stands with mug of tea
and watches children rush around. His true vocation, Edward's
found.
At 4pm there's sometimes sport and Edward's there to lend support
to school teams playing this or that. He wears a school scarf and a
hat.
He'll also coach the cricket team, even though the chances seem
remote that they'll collect the cup. He will not let his side give
up.
After school, there's books to mark - he carries on 'til after
dark.
Tomorrow's lessons he'll prepare, their content chosen with great
care.
He feels he needs the long school break to rest his mind and sometimes
takes
a holiday in foreign parts, to renew his interest in the arts.
But back at school, the axe is honed: "Last in, first out," Headmaster
groans
"cuts in the budget there must be!" Poor Edward's only
twenty-three.
His pupils cry to see him leave - that he must go, they can't
conceive
when far worse teachers keep their posts. Dead wood - dead minds is all
they boast.
